The capital’s most forward-thinking bass night returns with the experimental sounds of Airhead topping a lineup of some of London’s finest new blood…
AIRHEAD (Brainmath) – http://mysp.ac/9pyWJq
Our headline slot will be filled by the elusive genius AIRHEAD, a young Londoner whose incredible output has been released via the ever-inventive Brainmath label. The ‘Pembroke/Lock In The Lion’ EP (featuring James Blake) was a breakthrough in experimental bass; with ghostly vocals, wild saw-waves and complex drum patterns all showcased to devastating effect. Aith his Paper Street EP out only in the last week (backed by a sublime Nick Hoppner remix) and with his album due out on Brainmath this year, this is the perfect time to witness a rare DJ set before the inevitable boom in 2011.
LAPALUX – http://mysp.ac/cDfKMM
We retain our live credentials with an appearance from the talented Lapalux. His stunning output, which ranges from the chop and screwed ‘Cousin If’ to the floating aura of ‘There Are Monsters In This Bed’, melds hip-hop, electronica and hazy noise into a hazy East-coast dream-sequence quite unlike anything that has been heard since the heydays of Four Tet et al.
DROP/DEAD – http://mysp.ac/d8qmAk
Sometimes it takes just one link to uncover a mine of bass treasures, and XLR8R’s praise of Drop/Dead revealed a somewhat low-key producer whose lush, garage-tinged works would fit happily alongside the outputs of Hotflush, Hemlock and Hessle Audio. With the tempo dropped slightly there’s a more house-orientated feel to his sound, giving some of the 5am crew a chance to drop some bass-heavy pieces too.
BARE GIRLS – http://mysp.ac/bfModB
The SOB-founder and resident cat-burglar returns to the live circuit once again. Since his initial jaunts there’s been untold mayhem, peaking with an unfortunate footwork accident leading to broken bones and endless shoulder pain. If only partly recovered, there’ll be no detracting from the bass and bump of his laptop-heavy live set, containing a trove of unreleased tracks and loops.
FAT CONTROLLER – http://bit.ly/c5t4yh
He may have only just started churning out mixes (via the fresh-faced Mixcloud site) but Fat Controller seemed to fit the Beige mould to a T, and as such has been invited to to tear into the minds of SOB-goers with a bass-heavy shovel. Expect any number of ditties from Dilla, Mount Kimbie, Young Montana, Ramadanman, Toro Y Moi, Teebs, Flying Lotus, A Tribe Called Quest, Moody Mann, Onra, XXXy, James Blake, Mike Slott, Four Tet, Shlohmo, Devonwho and many more…
And remember it’s all still very much free!
We’ve had a recent influx of mixtapes and will be putting one out each week until the end of the year now. Check out SOB.006 by Solar Bears, whose debut LP ‘She Was Coloured In’ on Planet Mu achieved ‘Album Of The Month’ in Vice and a raft of glowing reviews…
Watch out for future mixes by Fur, Lacc Fork and a special Lapalux mix the week before the night.
And don’t forget to hit us up on all the usual Beige sources. We’re a prominent force on all the accounts below so do give us a shout, a Like and a Diggy-McDigg-Stumble!
