Only truly great things last the test of time. While fashions and trends come and go those that stay true to themselves and the beliefs that make them strong last the distance.

In terms of London’s fickle nightlife scene 8 years is an impressive stretch and has seen The Doctor’s Orders go from humble beginnings, throwing a bi-monthly party at the now defunct Herbal, to filling venues throughout the capital and beyond with line ups that have always included the great and the good of both home-grown and international talent.

The line up marking this landmark occasion is no exception with good friend of The Doctor’s Orders & founding member of the ‘world famous’ Beat Junkies DJ Babu joined by his partner in crime the incredible Rakaa Iriscience. Together they are the Expansion Team Soundsystem, represent two thirds of Dilated Peoples and are responsible for some of the best true school Hip-Hop of the last 15 years.

As you would expect from any of the worlds best DJ crews DJ Babu is as skilled on the cut as he is rocking a party and is certain to be treating London to a very special set to mark the birthday of the party he has rocked more than any other in his years of travelling the globe.

To make things go off with an even louder bang than usual he is joined by Rakaa Iriscience who will not only be hosting the set but spitting some of his best loved verses and a few freestyles to show why he is one of the best loved MCs of the modern age.

As ever The Doctor’s Orders dream team of residents will be giving proceedings a little hometown flavour. From founder Spin Doctor and DMC Champ Mr Thing to the exciting talents of Chris P Cuts & Mo Fingaz you are guaranteed yet another legendary party from The Doctor’s Orders!

[London] Roy Ayers feat. Pete Rock @ Jazz Cafe – 20th, 21st & 22nd July

[London] Roy Ayers feat. Pete Rock @ Jazz Cafe – 20th, 21st & 22nd July

Facebook event – Click Here

Wed 20th, Thurs 21st & Fri 22nd July 2011
Jazz café
Tickets £22.50
Doors 7pm

“Jazz Café proudly presents ROY AYERS AND PETE ROCK’s new collaborative project”

This groundbreaking project is the first of it’s kind – jazz genius Roy Ayers performing with a Hip Hop/DJ legend PETE ROCK – in a Live band/DJ / Mc format. The show will feature exciting rendition’s of Roy’s most celebrated hits – Everybody Loves the Sunshine, We live in Brooklyn, and many others – with Pete Rock sampling Roy’s music and adding more hip hop flavor with his beats and rhymes.

One of the most visible and winning jazz vibraphonists of the 1960s, then an R&B bandleader in the 1970s and ’80s, Roy Ayers’ reputation is now that of one of the prophets of jazz funk, Ayers’ own playing has always been rooted in hard bop: crisp, lyrical, rhythmically resilient.” Pete Rock has pioneered the fusing of jazz, funk and soul into hip-hop, laying down the blueprint for beautiful soulful production in hip-hop. He revolutionized rap production through groundbreaking studio wizardry, most notably in his collaboration with CL Smooth in the 90’s. He made remixes matter more than the original songs. He established ad-libs as a standard recording asset. Naturally he is well suited to approach the music of Roy Ayers with his ‘Midas Touch’. Far from a wallflower, Pete is revolutionizing Roy’s music and applying his own wizardry to the material to bring out new sounds, new flavors, and a whole new approach to the fusion of Jazz and Hip Hop

This is truly a meeting of minds, a show not to be missed, as it is history in the making and re-making in front of your eyes.

+ DJs:

Wednesday 20th July: Matman (DMC Champ/ Droppin’ Science)
Thursday 21st July: Ali Gudgeon (First Word Records)

[London] MEOW UK Talent Showcase – Saturday 23rd july @ Briton Jamm

[London] MEOW UK Talent Showcase – Saturday 23rd july @ Briton Jamm

Saturday 23rd July

Brixton Jamm, 261 Brixton Road, London, SW9 6LH

The UK Hip Hop movement has grown massively over the past 5 years. Artists like Tinie Tempah, Chipmunk & Dizzee Rascal after years on the underground are finally getting the plaudits they deserve.

Meow looks to support the grass roots of this movement, giving artists the chance showcase their talent. With so many rappers coming out of the South London area, it is only right that Meow return to BRIXTON JAMM on Saturday 23rd July to continue the movement and search for our next star of UK Hip Hop.

Silas Zephania is a young Hip Hop artist based in South London. His art form of raw Hip Hop and true lyricism has gained him much respect among his peers, promoters, DJ’s and producers. Silas is currently working on his 5th official release.
Silas aims to bring the standard of mic skills back into the game and empower humanity through thought provoking music.
After many excellent performances at our showcases, Silas has just been added to the Meow website.

This influential Rap group consisting of 7 members all South London based have a massive following of loyal supporters. They consider themselves the best group in London who feel they are close to a record deal. Come and see this group smash the stage at Brixton Jamm.

Built a lot of hype after performing alongside ENGLISH FRANK and featuring on his mixtapes. Manic hasn’t performed live in public for some time, rather spending the time in the studio making fresh new bangers. He has a massive following in the South London area who will all be their to see the man himself pick the mic up again for the first time in over a year.

The UK’s grime scene has grown rapidly in the last 8 years and with underground artists making it mainstream, new talent is continuing to breakthrough.
This duo is certainly the ‘one to watch’ in 2011 and with their strong determination and pure raw talent they are set to make Future History within the Grime Genre.

Bluesoul Pharmacy “BSP” formed from two musical collaborations in the later months of 2005; “Blue Soul LDN” which was founded by Blueyez and “De Pharmacy” founded by Murphy.
The creative vibes were instantaneous between them and it soon became clear that in joining forces they could bring forth something fresh and unique to the music industry… And thus the Bluesoul Pharmacy was born.

If you want to get on stage you need to be a serious urban artist looking to forge a career in the music business. If you manage to get on stage you could gain free exposure on the Meow website: perhaps even be invited back as a special guest.

[London] The Boom Bap! – Thursday 21 July @ Queen of Hoxton

[London] The Boom Bap! – Thursday 21 July @ Queen of Hoxton

Date: Thursday 21 July
Time: 8pm – 2am
Venue: Queen of Hoxton, 1 Curtain Road, Shoreditch, EC2A

The Boom Bap! is an alternative hip-hop night in East London that blurs the boundaries between audience and DJ. How? By letting the audience become the DJ. They can pre-submit tracks to play, listen to emerging producers and beat makers, participate in open decks (think open mics but for DJs) and trade their unwanted vinyl! The night is also about instigating the intimate relationship between audience and DJ; by returning back to the age where the DJ did not conform to the status quo, playing commercial tracks to prove their popularity, but spun tunes that actually enlightened their listeners!

DJs on the night:-

– Eric Lau (1st guess DJ to skool us)
– DJ T-Sparks
– DJ Excalibah

Door Entry: £3 (all night)
Entry: £3

Facebook link:

We are looking for people to take part:
-open decks (think open mic) max of 4 ppl.
– producers/beatmakers/Emcees to send us music.
-Telling us what tracks old or new you would like to hear.
– Trade vinyl

If you are interested in either then send your details to us at:

Closest tubes: Liverpool St Station & Shoreditch High St. It is literally 5 min walk from either. It is about 10-15 mins walk from Old St Station.

It’s hard to believe that the rowdy Irish Americans got started way back in 1991, but for the past 20 years the group has maintained a high profile – topping the Billboard charts as a group and with solo efforts. It was a turn of a new decade when House Of Pain changed the face of hip-hop with their self-titled debut album, going multi-platinum and launching one of the most memorable songs in hip-hop history with Jump Around. Now it’s the start of another new decade and House Of Pain is ready to do it all over again; the group aims to bring their fiery live show to fans all over the world, reclaim the throne as hip-hop’s best and celebrate what has allowed their successes over the past 20 years – the fans.

[London] Ice Cube & Naughty By Nature @ Indigo2 Tuesday 12 July

[London] Ice Cube & Naughty By Nature @ Indigo2 Tuesday 12 July

Buy Tickets (Click Here)

TCO is proud to present true legends of Rap, Ice Cube & Naughty By Nature in concert.

Pioneers and originators of West coast & east coast rap come together for two exclusive and unmissable dates in the UK. O’Shea Jackson, better known as Ice Cube, is a rap legend of his own lifetime. The American rapper, actor, screenwriter, film director, and producer, who began his stella career as a member of seminal gangster / reality rap group N.W.A. alongside Dr Dre, Eazy-E and MC Ren in South Central LA California, is now just as famous as a Hollywood actor with leading roles in some classic hit movies such as, Barbershop, Boyz In the Hood, Friday, Three Kings, etc. But 2010 saw Cube return to his true calling with his 9th studio album ‘I Am The West’, and it’s with this body of work that Ice Cube sets off on the road and hits the UK in July 2011. Expect to hear classic joints spanning 9 albums, from his first solo album AmeriKKKa’s Most Wanted, via bangers ‘It Was Good Day’, ‘Check Yo Self ‘ ft Das EFX, through to the club banger ‘You Can Do It’.

Bringing the West Coast & East coast rap together on one stage will be Grammy Award winning Naughty By Nature. The American rap trio from East Orange, New Jersey, formed in 1989, consisting of Treach, Vin Rock, and the DJ Kay Gee. Originally mentored by fellow New Jersey native Queen Latifah, Naught By Nature stormed the hip hop (and pop) world with their Jackson 5 hit ’ABC’ sampled record ‘O.P.P.’ in 1991. The group have had multiple hits from the subsequent 6 albums, including ‘Poverty’s Paradise’ which won a Grammy Award in 1996 for Best Rap Album, becoming the first album to win this award. With Treach’s stage presence, and the musical ability of dj & producer Kay Gee on the stage, Naughty By Nature will be bringing that old school block party flavour to the UK!

2 rap legends together on one stage, ICE CUBE & NAUGHTY BY NATURE, unmissable!

BASS PLANET (Dubstep Session)

LIVE ARTWORK on the night by DOODLISM & THE GRAFFITI LIFE COMPANY has a fresh look, new content and all the reviews and interviews you need to understand what’s what in British hip hop. Set up in 1999 and still reppin’ the best in homegrown music.

As always if you want to get involved with the site on a voluntary basis then get in touch with us via:

The Boxettes are an all-female vocal group based in London. Their distinctive sound makes fine use of the complementing styles of their voices: Alyusha, Yvette, Neo and Harriet, and current World Female Beatbox Champion Bellatrix- all combining to evocative and powerful effect. The Boxettes have an unconventional a-capella sound with tight beatbox work set against dreamy, sundrenched harmonics- as each of the girls take turns in either narrating over a melody, providing chord work, beatboxing or fx sounds with their mouths. The Boxettes are by now well used to the expressions of disbelief in audience faces- the extended vocal techniques of their five members combining to elicit an enormous sound, as visceral as it is delicate, performed with swagger as well as good nature. Having started with a focus on Jazz interpellation, the band soon evolved and begun incorporating elements of hip-hop, drum and bass, motown and soul.

LDZ (LondonZoo)
LDZ also known as LondonZoo are one of the most diverse, prolific and versatile Hiphop outfits to emerge from the UK. Their first release, a dubstep track, was played by the late John Peel on BBC Radio One. Since then Ldz have worked with Chase & Status, Foreign Beggars, Taskforce, Dubbledge, Stig of the dump, Dr Syntax, Alabama3, Congo Natty and many more. Their first official video ‘ Lips 2 da floor’ ft Dubbledge has had over 900,000 views on YouTube and recieved regular plays on mainstream and underground radio shows from BBC Radio 1 to Rinse fm.The energy and vibe they created soon got them a reputation for their musical diversity, from Breaks, HipHop to Dubstep to Broken Beats they were soon hosting rooms at One Nation, Herbal and Sankey’s suppoting acts such as Rahzel, ScratchPerverts, Adam F, Rodney P & Skitz, The Beatnuts and many more. An incredibly vast musical background is what gives LDZ the versatility and ability to smash every genre from hip-hop, drum & bass/jungle, breakbeat, house, dubstep, broken beat and everything else in-between.

The name Grand Central, which means “at the heart of something big”, is the perfect reflection of their intent to “make moves and make history”. Mr. Drastick is the embodiment of the street smart hustler; earning his stripes after selling thousands of self financed music product nationwide, whilst Kinetik is the poster boy for the book smart university student who spent years soaking up knowledge in the lecture halls. Their varying traits do not prove to be an awkward juxtaposition but a key component within their ying and yang approach to everything they do, most importantly, their organic yet immediate chemistry. Industry luminaries such as Semtex, Shortee Blitz and D.J. M.K. have all agreed that the future is bright for Grand Central.

Bass Planet are a UK Bass Music record label, founded from a deeply rooted belief in the life changing power of sound and rhythm. 2011 has seen Bass’s music aired on, showcased on the notorious Skindad and Curly midweek session and the station’s New Year’s show. There are several massive releases planned this year under his own Bass Planet label, from aggressive bass & militant beats to heartfelt outpourings of the soul, music forging the future of electronic sound. Current collaborators include, Kofi Ankrah aka SkankMan, Phil Ramocon (singer/songwriter and pianist), and Zed, aka One Blood Productions. This collective is a promising mix of cultures and musical backgrounds, which has come about out of a common love and dedication of creative musical expression.
