[London] The Doctors Orders.. SOULS OF MISCHIEF – Sunday 11th March @ Jazz Cafe

[London] The Doctors Orders.. SOULS OF MISCHIEF – Sunday 11th March @ Jazz Cafe

Time: 7pm – 11pm
Location: The Jazz Cafe, Parkway, Camden London NW1
TICKETS £14.50

Facebook Event:

Hailing from Oakland, California, The Souls of Mischief formed in 1991 and is composed of emcees A-Plus, Opio, Phesto, and Tajai. Part of the Hip-Hop collective Hieroglyphics and considered by many as part of the native tongues collective due to their appearance of the cover of A Tribe Called Quest’s ‘Midnight Marauders’.
The roots of the group sprouted early when Tajai began rhyming with future band mate A-Plus at age 8, while both were in elementary school. Tajai and Phesto met later in junior high school and after meeting Opio the group informally formed in high school before making their major-label debut on Jive Records with their well-received album ’93 ’til Infinity’, which in January, 1998, was named one of the Top 100 Rap albums by The Source magazine.

The group stayed with Jive for one more album, 1995’s No Man’s Land. That same year the group officially formed the alternative hip-hop collective Hieroglyphics, with emcees Del tha Funkee Homosapien, Casual, Pep Love, Jaybiz, and producer Domino. The group participated as full members in both Hieroglyphics’ studio albums: 1998’s 3rd Eye Vision, and 2003’s Full Circle.

The group has released two albums on the Hiero’s self-owned independent label, Hieroglyphics Imperium Recordings, 1999’s ‘Focus’, and 2000’s ‘Trilogy: Conflict, Climax, Resolution’ before a long hiatus before most recently releasing 2009’s Montezuma’s Revenge.|

There is little doubt that Souls of Mischief are still one of the best loved groups from the golden age of 90’s Hip-Hop and this is a rare opportunity to see them tear up a London stage so make the most of it.

[London] The Doctors Orders: GANGRENE: THE ALCHEMIST & OHNO – Sunday 19th February @ Jazz Cafe

The Doctor’s Orders & The Jazz Cafe presents..

[London] GANGRENE: THE ALCHEMIST & OHNO – Sunday 19th February @ Jazz Cafe

Time: 7pm – 11pm
Location: The Jazz Cafe, Parkway, Camden London NW1
Tickets: £15 in advance

Facebook event:

After a first album Gutter Water acclaimed by critics and a huge tour all over the world, ALC & OHNO alias GANGRENE are back with the second episode of their psychedelic trip Vodka & Ayahuasca. They hit the Jazz Cafe stage for this exclusive London show courtesy of The Doctor’s Orders.

THE ALCHEMIST : After rising to prominence in the late 1990s as a close associate of Cypress Hill, Dilated Peoples and Mobb Deep, he went on to produce for many of hip hop’s leading artists in the 2000s, and has been hailed as one of Hip-Hop’s leading producers. Well known to The Doctor’s Orders faithful through his soundclash shows alongside Just Blaze it is a pleasure to welcome him back.

OHNO : The youngest brother of Madlib is an underground hip hop legend who has released several albums through Stones Throw and has produced for manu including De La Soul, MURS and label mate MED. He is one of the few real underground Hip-Hop talents that we have been trying to book since we launched so we are glad to finally have our man,
Vodka & Ayahuasca is a follow-up to their gritty Decon debut Gutter Water. Al & Oh again split their time between helming psychedelic beats and spitting tripped-out rhymes. While Ayahuasca (a natural hallucinogenic brew, containing DMT) may not be a term familiar to the palette of the average rap consumer, Gangrene is about to change all that. Vodka & Ayahuacsa boasts choice collabs from Kool G Rap, Prodigy (of Mobb Deep), dilated ally Evidence, Roc Marciano, who laces the suggestive “Drink Up”, a welcome addition to the kaleidoscopic head-trip.

Soundcrash & The Doctor’s Orders are proud to present the UK premiere of ‘Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest’, Michael Rapaport’s award winning film documenting the highs and lows of Hip Hop’s Golden Era’s most celebrated group A Tribe Called Quest. Featuring an original soundtrack by Madlib and including humorous & insightful interviews with the likes of ?uestlove, De La Soul, Ghostface Killah, Pharrell Williamsm Adam Horowitz and Mary J Blige as well as extensive accounts from Q-Tip, Phife Dawg, Jarobi White and Ali Shaheed Muhammad, never has the story of A Tribe Called Quest been better told. The screening will be followed by an exclusive live show by original Tribesman Phife Dawg featuring ATCQ classics from ‘Peoples Instinctive Travels’, ‘Midnight Marauders’, ‘Low End Theory’, ‘Beats, Rhymes & Life’ as well as new material.

An essential night for A Tribe Called Quest enthusiasts and music lovers in general.

Film synopsis:
As Beats, Rhymes & Life begins, the rappers who anchored pioneering group A Tribe Called Quest are already going their separate ways. As youths in the mid-’80s, the Queens-born foursome of Tribe—Q-Tip, Phife Dawg, Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Jarobi White—found success with their exhuberant exploration and combination of hip hop, pop and jazz. But in recent years, Q-Tip, the band’s visionary and reluctant pop star, has tired of the street-bred capriciousness of his lyrical partner Phife, who is equally frustrated with Q-Tip. How these two friends and musical partners got to this state forms the guts of actor-turned-filmmaker Michael Rapaport’s candid and combustible documentary.

[London] ELZHI with Live Band Plus Yungun, Mr Thing & Spin Doctor – Thurs 3rd November @ Jazz Cafe

[London] ELZHI with Live Band Plus Yungun, Mr Thing & Spin Doctor – Thurs 3rd November @ Jazz Cafe

Facebook event:

7pm-11pm Thursday 3rd November 2011
Tickets £15 in advance

Before the world ever heard the name ELZHI the young artist was sitting in the back of classrooms thinking of rhymes, spitting verses while his friend banged out beats on desks. He sharpened every blade in his arsenal, developing his style to measure up against the competition in Maurice Malone’s Hip Hop Shop, the legendary proving ground for Detroit artists that produced some of the greatest emcees in the world.

ELZHI spent years paying dues, writing songs, entering battles, and recording demos until he finally made his international debut on “Come and Get It,” a standout track from J-Dilla’s ‘Welcome 2 Detroit’. The acclaimed song drew massive attention to the mysterious artist, and made his unfinished EP, Out of Focus, a highly sought after

ELZHI fuelled this buzz by joining Slum Village in 2001 elevating the crew’s reputation, and allowing him to reach new levels of lyricism. He recorded multiple albums with his former group, selling hundreds of thousands of records, and touring the world.

In 2004, ELZHI released ‘Witness My Growth’, a two disc mixtape featuring many of his lost or unfinished solo songs, which has come to be considered an underground classic. Upon his returning form his first solo tour he promptly released the ‘The Preface’, his solo debut on Fat Beats Records. The album helped to solidify his
reputation as one of the most inventive lyricists in the world, earning acclaim from legendary artists and fans alike. In 2009, responding to the demands of his passionate fan base, ELZHI released The ‘Leftovers’ mixtape, a collection of rare tracks and unreleased exclusives featuring the hit single “Deep.”

In 2010, no longer content with being “your favourite rapper’s favourite rapper,” ELZHI got down to business. Moving past the relationship with his former group, ELZHI has reinvented himself as a solo artist and reignited his early buzz. This year, he released ‘ElMatic’, a homage to Nas’s classic debut, ‘ILLmatic’. A labor of love
that set the internet alight, the project finds the Detroit emcee creating new songs out of Nas’s originals while rapping over the Will Sessions Band’s interpretation of the original beats.

Tonight he hits the stage alongside his live band to treat The Doctor’s Orders heads to another incredible performance of his work including the ‘Out Of Focus’ EP which is now finally available for download exclusively through

As ever Spin Doctor will be warming things up with his usual blend of soulful sounds and tonight he is joined by The Doctor’s Orders regulars Yungun & Mr Thing performing live on stage.

[London] The Doctors Orders & Jazz Cafe Present: Das EFX live – Sunday 9th October 2011

[London] The Doctors Orders & Jazz Cafe Present: Das EFX live – Sunday 9th October 2011

Facebook event:

HMV Tickets:

“Chiggedy-check yo self before you wriggedy-wreck yo self”

Das EFX is an American hip hop duo consisting of emcees
SKOOB & KRAZY DRAYZY. They rose to popularity in the early 90s
through the support of with EPMD’s Hit Squad. The duo gained critical and commercial fame with the release of their landmark debut album ‘Dead Serious’ which highlighted their unusual rapping Jamaican influenced rhyming style which they nicknamed “sewage”. ‘Dead Serious’ went platinum and its lead single, ‘They Want EFX’ reached the top ten on the US Billboard R&B charts.

As their career progressed Das EFX’s distinctive and unique lyrical delivery became more commonplace as other artists, including a young Jay-Z, imitated it. It has also become part of wider Hip-Hop parlance with Dave Chapelle even referencing it in several sketches.

As a reaction the duo slowed down their fast-paced flow, eliminated
the ‘iggedy’ suffix and downplayed the cartoonish content on their second classic album ‘Straight Up Sewaside’. With 3 more albums to their catalogue still they will be rocking this, their debut show at the Jazz Café, with all of their classics from over the years so make sure you are there!

‘Dragon Of An Ordinary Family’ out NOW on YNR records.

Often an artist’s biography is full of buzz-words, wildly sweeping statements & unabashed claims of influencing a generation or changing the face of their chosen genre. Very few can say it with the conviction and sincerity of British born lyricist & producer Jehst. With a sound comparable to none, Jehst’s entrance onto the domestic Hip Hop scene truly gave birth to a new breed of wordsmith. From 1999’s ‘Premonitions’ through the classic ‘Return Of The Drifter’ and ‘Falling Down’ albums Jehst has consistently delivered music of real depth and quality, culminating in this year’s ‘Dragon Of An Ordinary Family’. This will be the London debut of his brand new live show featuring Jazz T, Micall Parknsun, Kwake (Speakers Corner Quartet), Louis Slipperz (Task Force) and Fae Simon.

[London] Roy Ayers feat. Pete Rock @ Jazz Cafe – 20th, 21st & 22nd July

Facebook event – Click Here

Wed 20th, Thurs 21st & Fri 22nd July 2011
Jazz café
Tickets £22.50
Doors 7pm

“Jazz Café proudly presents ROY AYERS AND PETE ROCK’s new collaborative project”

This groundbreaking project is the first of it’s kind – jazz genius Roy Ayers performing with a Hip Hop/DJ legend PETE ROCK – in a Live band/DJ / Mc format. The show will feature exciting rendition’s of Roy’s most celebrated hits – Everybody Loves the Sunshine, We live in Brooklyn, and many others – with Pete Rock sampling Roy’s music and adding more hip hop flavor with his beats and rhymes.

One of the most visible and winning jazz vibraphonists of the 1960s, then an R&B bandleader in the 1970s and ’80s, Roy Ayers’ reputation is now that of one of the prophets of jazz funk, Ayers’ own playing has always been rooted in hard bop: crisp, lyrical, rhythmically resilient.” Pete Rock has pioneered the fusing of jazz, funk and soul into hip-hop, laying down the blueprint for beautiful soulful production in hip-hop. He revolutionized rap production through groundbreaking studio wizardry, most notably in his collaboration with CL Smooth in the 90’s. He made remixes matter more than the original songs. He established ad-libs as a standard recording asset. Naturally he is well suited to approach the music of Roy Ayers with his ‘Midas Touch’. Far from a wallflower, Pete is revolutionizing Roy’s music and applying his own wizardry to the material to bring out new sounds, new flavors, and a whole new approach to the fusion of Jazz and Hip Hop

This is truly a meeting of minds, a show not to be missed, as it is history in the making and re-making in front of your eyes.

Wednesday 20th July: Matman (DMC Champ/ Droppin’ Science)
Thursday 21st July: Ali Gudgeon (First Word Records)
